Diary Of A City Girl In The Village. By Perpetua Orumwese

Hmm, where do I start from, don't really know how to do this, but I heard keeping a journal or Diary can help relieve stress, trust me, I have so much I need relief from. So I guess I will start with introducing myself...

Dear diary, I am Temtope Olohuntoyin, friends call me temi, enemies? I don't really care much what they think. I was born some 27yrs ago into the family of mr and mrs olohuntoyin mom damilola dad bidemi. Live in Lagos Nigeria.
My parents story, I think it's best we reserve it for another day, It is a handful. As an only child I am so loved, I went to the best of schools, have the best of everything, well almost everything...

Recently, I over heard my friends talking about me, some how they think I have had everything handed down to me, born with a silver spoon, blah blah blah... I must say I was shocked at first, but then again that's what most friends do, talk about you behind your back. I just wish they knew it's not as easy as it looks...

I have been doing some thinking, and I have decided to leave my comfort zone for a while, I have decided to spend some free cash to affect some kids lives... Also thought of where then I decided I was going to do it in some remote place, maybe a village, yeah diary, you heard right, we are heading to a village.

March 3rd 2015
Dear diary, I am so tired, I can barely move, I decided to go on a one month vacation in any village and I chose onifade a village in western Nigeria. I can't believe I am actually doing this, I found myself journing to onifade I arrived onifade late in the evening, was in the vehicle the better part of the day passing a lot of bad roads and bumpy roads, ha! Naija my country.

I got to onifade and I couldn't believe my eyes, do people still live like this? I must have been living in the space or something. Hmm, I finally got a hold of myself and with much reservation and caution asked one of the bike guys that I needed an accommodation, many of them jumped at the opportunity dragging my bags with me until I finally picked one, what a hassle.

I finally got here after another long bumpy ride, I swear I was secretly praying, here I was with a stranger on a strange territory, what was I thinking...
I tipped the okada man and he instisted on going in with me saying he dosent want them to cheat me, guess he could tell I was a stranger and a novice, I was introduced to some old lady who welcomed me warmly. I polished my pigin english and went to work;

Mama how much for house, I asked...
My pikin 500 naira and you go pay for three months... She replied
Jesus!  I screamed because I was so surprised..
Then she asked; "e too dare? I said no mama just perfect .

500 naira will get you almost nothing were I come from...She showed me a room, it looked really rough and dirty but I could care less, I have decided to do this and I was go to give it my all! I was to tired to do anything, just cleared a spot, spread my wrapper and used my duffle bag as a pillow. I slept like a baby till this morning...
